 | With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience. If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get. - Minimum size = Viewing distance/3
- Maximum size=Viewing distance/1.5

Excellent TV! April 16, 2010 MJT (St. Louis, MO) 50 out of 51 found this review helpful
Purchased from Amazon. White glove delivery was seamless. They unpacked the set, attached the swivel stand, placed it on the media console and hooked it up to the cablebox. All I had to do was supervise. Now let's talk about the 55LD650 itself.
Picture Quality. Considering there are no reviews out yet, I considered it somewhat of a gamble to purchase this new LG model (which according to the sticker was built in February of this year). But after watching HD programing for a few hours, my concerns evaporated. The picture quality is impressive. This is my first LCD. I've always been a plasma guy and have two Pannys, so I had my concerns. Howver, after watching Monsters vs Aliens, I definitely have no complaints about the PQ. The images on the 55 inch screen popped beautifully. So much so that my kids even asked if it was in 3D!
Off-Angle Viewing. Viewing the TV from various angles (even extreme ones), I can confirm that this set did not have any noticeable degradation in picture quality from off-angle viewing(unlike some Sonys I looked at). Very impressive.
Glare. This was the main reason I sought out an LCD set, since the TV resides in a very bright room with two sides of floor-to-ceiling windows. This eliminated the plasma option (though we first tried a Sammy plasma and aside from the mirror-like glare, we couldn't handle the loud buzzing noise it made). While there's some glare on this TV when it's not on, there was nothing noticeable on the matte sceen when watching programs.
All in all, I'm very pleased with 55ld650 thus far.
Better than my Sony or Samsung April 16, 2010 Edog (Sacramento, CA) 17 out of 18 found this review helpful
I also got this tv through the deal at Fry's. Picture quality is exceptional but what really puts this set over it's contemporaries is it's ability to stream media. For those that are interested in this, you can stream through the USB port or over the LAN connection. It will read vob files off of your drive without any additional equipment. Pretty handy for those looking at any of the external media streamers which will run about $100 to $150 for high definition. The menu system is simple and this set is less than 4" deep when wall mounted. I'm now looking for another LG to replace my Sony! The price on Amazon is not bad with the free shipping and lack of taxes.
Great TV for your money. The Picture Quality is terrific April 16, 2010 The Guy 15 out of 16 found this review helpful
LG 55LD650 is the TV you need if you want your dollar to go further. I got this from frys on a super deal that included a free blu ray player.
See, it has 240 Hz , Internet connectivity, wi-fi ready and is the newest LG (2010) model. On top of that, most importantly, the pictures are crisp and terrific. I compared this with another samsung at the store, I felt both has the same PQ. Why you pay more for a bragging rights ? LG is not a sub-par model at all. Check other LG TVs review here in Amazon and see what the users experience. Recent consumer reports survey has one of the LGs as the first in >50 inch section.
On the down side, I wish it had PIP on it..
Edit 4/17 : I forgot to add about the sound. The sound is just OK. But, still, I can hear it clear and loud enough from my couch (16 feet away from the set) and its not at the maximum setting for sound. on 26 that can go all the way to 200
Excellent TV May 3, 2010 Sean Saunders (Atco, NJ) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
Before I bought this LG, I was planning on purchasing the equivalent Samsung. However, I had read some reviews about a rainbow effect that could be scene in reflections on the screen. I thought it was an exaggeration until I went to Best Buy and saw it for myself. The rainbow effect is horrible and can not believe that Samsung put that on the market. What I also found out is that only LG and Sony make a good matte screen in the 55" size. The room that the TV was going to be in has 6 windows and 2 skylights. There was no way that a shiny screen would work. Anyway, I obviously chose the LG over Sony and I am loving this TV! The picture is incredible. One thing that I should mention - you'll most likely want to turn off the "Tru Motion" feature. It comes with it turned on by default and I thought for sure that it should be on. I started watching some HD shows and some DVD's right away and was not very happy with this super smooth motion that everything had. It would remind you of a soap opera since they are shot with video cameras and have that same smooth motion. It's hard to describe, but you would know it when you see it. I really didn't like it, but the easy solution was to turn off "tru motion". Now everything looks normal to me. The internet features are really cool too. I am very happy with this purchase!
Love it ! May 7, 2010 M. Johnson (Boston, MA) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
The LG 55LD650 was not available in local retailers so we went out on a limb and bought it sight unseen from Amazon.
We had previously decided on an similar model from another brand, until we read about an increase in quality issues. So we changed gears and started looking at the LGs. Amazon not only had the availability, but the price and free delivery couldn't be beat.
The setup was simple (including connecting to cable, blu-ray, gaming system and surround sound).
The picture quality is great.
Someone else commented about sound issues in their review - we have not experienced any problems with the sound. We have it on a low setting and the sound is loud and clear. We also have it hooked up to our surround sound, but tend not to use it for regular TV viewing.
We are very happy with the product and would buy it again.
